PDF pattern setup

How to print sewing patterns at home at the correct scale.

Use the correct paper size, select 100% or “Actual size,” print the test page first, and measure the test square before assembling a tiled pattern.

Printer producing a sewing pattern page with a one-inch test square

Before printing every page

The test square is your scale check.

If the test square measures incorrectly, every pattern piece will be enlarged or reduced. Fix the print setting before using paper, ink, or fabric on the full file.

  • 1

Match the file to the paper. Use A4 for A4 paper and US Letter for Letter paper.

  • 2

Print at actual size. Disable Fit, Shrink, Fill, or Scale to page.

  • 3

Measure physically. A screen ruler cannot verify the printed result.

Print a tiled PDF sewing pattern step by step

Save the file and open it in a PDF reader

Download the file to the device instead of printing from a browser preview. A dedicated PDF reader usually exposes scale, orientation, layers, and page-range controls more clearly.

Choose A4 or US Letter

The PDF version and physical paper should match. A4 measures 210 × 297 mm. US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches. Do not force one format onto the other using “Fit.”

Select “Actual size” or 100%

Look for a scale field in the print dialog. Set it to 100%. Turn off Fit, Shrink oversized pages, Fill page, or any automatic scaling option.

Print only the test page

Measure the printed test square with a reliable ruler. If a 1-inch square or 5-cm square is not exact, review the paper and scale settings before printing the remaining pages.

Print, sort, and assemble the tiled pages

Keep pages in numerical order. Trim margins only where the instructions require it, align registration marks, and tape pages on a flat surface without stretching the paper.

PDF sewing pattern printing problems

The test square is too small

The printer probably used Fit, Shrink, or a scale below 100%. Reopen the print dialog, select Actual size, and confirm the correct paper format.

The test square is too large

Check for a custom scale above 100%, borderless enlargement, or a printer driver setting that expands content.

Lines are missing

If the file uses layers, verify that the intended size layer and required labels are visible. Also try a different PDF reader and disable ink-saving modes that may drop very light lines.

Pages are cut off

Confirm that the project actually supports home printing. Large-format copy-shop files are not designed to tile automatically on home printers.

Support: Include the pattern name, PDF reader, printer model, selected paper size, and a photograph of the measured test square when emailing support@stitchvani.com.
